Client smartgwt 1.15.x branch and release 1.15.2

Oliver May-4
Hi all,

Last week I have been struggling with updating an application to the last smartgwt version, the last version comes with GWT 2.7.0, which is a factor 3 slower for maven building and -excuse my language- an utterly useless piece of sh*t when developing in (super)dev mode.

So enough ranting. I decided to create an 1.15.x branch, based on the last commit before hell broke loose. My intention is to release 1.15.2 which also includes some cherry picked commits from master (448: allow opacity on rasterised vector layers and 724: allow configuration of disclaimer message in the layer info widget).

Is there anybody who doesn't agree with this approach?

What about the versioning of the branch, if I follow the contributor guide the logical version would be 1.16.0-SNAPSHOT, master should be 1.17.0-SNAPSHOT (which isn't so).

PS:
My final words on the gwt 2.7.0 topic:
For me it ends here. The SmartGWT client died at the commit introducing 2.7.0, I will continue to fix bugs or add new functionalities for customers, but only on the 1.15.x branch. GWT made such a mess... Today I promise myself never to build or even check out code that combines 2.7.0 with smartgwt,... ever.

cheers,

Oliver,

quite a rant indeed. I haven't touched SmartGWT in ages, and also would like to keep it that way. As far as I'm concerned this branch is end of life, and has been for a while. I don't think anyone will work on it in the near future, so any work you still do is appreciated. So no, you don't have to try  and get everything into the 1.16.0-SNAPSHOT.

Perhaps we should make an official statement though on the Geomajas website that we consider the 1.x versions to be end of life. I would be interested in hearing some more opinions.

Cheers,

Pieter De Graef

Hi Pieter,

Master is currently several commits ahead of where I branched 1.15.x, part of those commits are updating the gwt2 dependency to the latest (including GWT 2.7.0). So there is no other option than to continue working on a branch. Or am I missing something?

cheers,

Oliver

As a result of the smartgwt branch, we will also need a gwt2 branch (before gwt 2.7.0 got introduced).

I suggest doing my fixes on master, and merging it into a branch of 2.2.0.

Any toughts on that one?

Oliver

Re: Client smartgwt 1.15.x branch and release 1.15.2

Pieter De Graef-2
Hmm, perhaps I'm not understanding you correctly. I thought you wanted to update the 2.2.x branch to point to a new common library because of the 1.15.2 release. Should master also point to that release then?

2016-02-18 10:00 GMT+01:00 Oliver May <[hidden email]>:
A bugfix or new feature will definitely have value on master, no?

2016-02-18 9:53 GMT+01:00 Pieter De Graef <[hidden email]>:
Isn't that an update that only needs to happen on the 2.2.x branch? So why commit on master?

Cheers,

Pieter De Graef

2016-02-18 9:47 GMT+01:00 Oliver May <[hidden email]>:
As a result of the smartgwt branch, we will also need a gwt2 branch (before gwt 2.7.0 got introduced).

I suggest doing my fixes on master, and merging it into a branch of 2.2.0.

Any toughts on that one?

cheers,

Oliver

2016-02-15 14:00 GMT+01:00 Pieter De Graef <[hidden email]>:
Seems fine to me.

2016-02-15 13:06 GMT+01:00 Oliver May <[hidden email]>:
Hi Pieter,

Master is currently several commits ahead of where I branched 1.15.x, part of those commits are updating the gwt2 dependency to the latest (including GWT 2.7.0). So there is no other option than to continue working on a branch. Or am I missing something?

cheers,

Oliver

2016-02-15 12:08 GMT+01:00 Pieter De Graef <[hidden email]>:
Oliver,

quite a rant indeed.

2016-02-15 9:23 GMT+01:00 Oliver May <[hidden email]>:

Today I promise myself never to build or even check out code that combines 2.7.0 with smartgwt,... ever.

cheers,

Re: Client smartgwt 1.15.x branch and release 1.15.2

Oliver May-4
No, it's the other way around, the smartgwt client 1.15.2 depends on gwt2 2.2.0, but I now probably need to do some bugfixing in gwt2. So my suggestion is to do that on master (everybody wins) and backport it to the 2.2.x branch (smartgwt wins).
